A wooden duplex house in Luxembourg is completed

Dondelange is a small village not far from the capital of Luxemburg. For about two months, the attention of both the inhabitants and visitors of this village has been focused on the construction of an attractive wooden duplex house. It was built by Riko Hiše based on the plan of a prominent architectural bureau STEINMETZ DE MEYER and an order from our business partner, the HAUSING real estate agency of Luxemburg, with which we share a sustainable philosophy as well as many plans for the future.

The construction of wooden duplex houses is always an interesting experience, and as ambassadors of ecological, low energy and above all pleasant and comfortable residential culture, we are happy to share that with anyone who is interested in sustainable and ambientally unique construction.

What is it that connects Hausing, Steinmetz de Meyer and Riko Hiše? It is primarily o sustainable orientation and fascination with wood, and the idea of constructing a wooden duplex house in the  that has brought us all together. Most of all, we give credit for this to enthusiastic young men from Hausing, who had purchased the plot and entrusted their idea to the architects of Steinmetz de Meyer, after which Riko Hiše were invited to join in its realisation. With the organisation of the house’s internal spaces, the adjacent garden and the terrace, as well as with the characteristic design signature of its author, the house’s architectural design will provide its residents with a high level of residential comfort by selecting wood as the construction material and complying with up-to-date ecological and low energy standards.

At the beginning of May, when the wall elements were already being built at our company, we were visited by our partners from Hausing. They were able to become thoroughly familiarised with the organisation of our manufacture. They also viewed some details from the production of wall panels for the wooden duplex house and met the entire team of Riko Hiše. Later, they visited the Škrabec homestead at which a multifunctional wooden barn also serves as a reputable cultural event space. The men from Hausing left full of optimism and furnished with enough information to begin the construction.

Before the arrival of workers from the Riko Hiše’s manufacturing department, everything that was necessary for the beginning of construction had to be prepared at the construction site, and naturally the foundations on which the duplex house was to be erected had to be built first.

After the construction site had been prepared, the professional staff of Riko Hiše, who had gained ample experience from having constructed wooden houses all across , headed to Dondelange. With them, they brought along a 40 ton crane, as well as the first wall elements for the duplex house. Work began immediately and date 24th of May was marked on the calendar.

On the third day of work at the construction site, the house slowly began to get a shape. A new truck had arrived with wooden elements and around both parts of the duplex house there was a scaffolding to enable the erection of the second floor. During the assembly and erection of such houses, the weather is a very important factor, so that work can proceed without interruptions, and until then we were happy to note that it had been our friend.

In the following days, the first floor ceiling was assembled and put in place, along with the staircases in both residential units. The assembly of wooden elements is a very precise task and everything has to be checked several times over as it is at the construction site that it becomes completely clear how important it is for elements to have been correctly produced during the manufacturing process. Because of many years of experience, almost nothing can surprise us anymore, and the credit for this also goes to our skilled assembly staff. Our partners from Hausing described them as “professionals with a good sense of humour” and we find that to be a fine compliment indeed.

A new day, a new truck from Ribnica. With the eighth truck came the latest elements for the roof. The work proceeded smoothly and according to plan, until our assembly staff discovered that unfortunately there had been an error in the plans, specifically in the bedroom measurements. Fortunately, they were able to immediately fix this at the location and work continued without interruption. In those days, it rained a lot and there was also some delay (measured in hours) because of the work needed to protect the wooden walls from moisture.

After ten days of constant work, the duplex house had acquired its full profile. The first phase of construction works ended with the insulation of the house. Since the building is quite large, the men needed a whole day for this.

The said conscientious and diligent “professionals with a good sense of humour” were then invited by the satisfied partners to have dinner in one of the most reputable restaurants in Luxemburg. Our men managed to charm the people of Luxemburg as well! Spending spare time together is certainly an excellent opportunity to meet one’s business partners on a more personal level, outside of the construction site. After dinner, our staff went home and left the house for other workers to work on.

After a short break (of 4 days), the team of Riko houses returned to Dondelange to “dress” the house up in a coat of black wooden façade. In the meantime, the employees of the Hausing company added some further insulation to the duplex house, and the Schramm team began their work, taking care of ventilation, plumbing and electrical installations.

On Saturday 25th June, the team of Riko Hiše finished their work. After applying the second coat of protective and decorative oils onto the wooden façade, the scaffolding was also removed, revealing two black beauties. During this time, the Schramm team had already completed the first phase of electrical installations in both houses. During the weeks that followed, the entire ventilation system was installed, along with plumbing and floor heating. The Hausing team, on the other hand, took care of the landscaping around the house to provide access to the garage and the entry doors. The house was thus ready for its future occupants!

We will continue this story after the residents of the two houses have moved in.

If you would like to see the process of erecting the duplex house in the small in greater detail, please visit the Facebook page of our partners from Hausing who made sure that the entire process was precisely documented.
